maithili chaturvedi

Maithili Chaturvedi is an artist from Mumbai, India and is currently pursuing her BFA in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. Painting for her is the confluence of her brain and her soul. She is particularly taken by the tension between genuine humanness evident in cinema and its inherent performative nature. This inspires her to create the same dichotomy in her paintings. She finds herself pioneering the effort to bring Hindi cinema, an artform close to her heart, from reel to canvas by celebrating its beauty, joy, hysteria, bravado, levity, candor, musicality, and most of all its authenticity.

The interaction between human eyes and digital screens is vital to how she paints. Her work reflects everything from Dadaistic fashion to turn-of-the-millennium aesthetics, and more contemporary visual and material culture. She uses saturation and desaturation so that her paintings stitch together the old and the new. It is important to her that her paintings remain playful yet emotive. Her current oeuvre is to paint and adorn her pieces the way one would a femme fatale or a diva in popular culture, literature, and song. She wants her paintings to look outwardly at you, just as much as you look inwardly at them.

There is an inner diva inside all of us; she hopes her work can help bring joy to yours.
